Thorn Grove Primary School celebrate 80th anniversary of VE Day

Category : Events

DL’s Karen Trew and Marion Brown enjoyed a wonderful afternoon celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day at Thorn Grove Primary School, Bishops Stortford on 2nd May. Guests from the local community who support a range of voluntary activities were also invited to a treat of afternoon tea with a celebration programme of readings, songs and dance performed by the pupils in Years 4 to 6. Everyone was invited to join in war time favourites such as ‘We’ll meet again’ and ‘keep the home fires burning.’ As well as reminding us all that we should never forget the sacrifice of so many who gave their lives for our freedom, it was particularly pleasing that the Year 6 students highlighted the importance of British Values in today’s society, something Karen and Marion had discussed with them on a previous visit last November.

Particular thanks to Kathy Canavan at the school who used her creativity and ingenuity to put together such a thought provoking programme. All guests were given a portion of (chocolate) fish and chips wrapped in newspaper as a reminder that supplies of fish and potatoes were not rationed during the two world wars as a way of boosting morale thereby embedding this dish as a national favourite. Pictured with Karen and Marion are Kathy Canavan of Thorn Grove and Josh Dean, MP for Hertford and Stortford.”
