Hertfordshire Vigil to remember the people of Ukraine
On 24th February 2023, Deputy Lieutenant Kate Belinis attended a vigil for Ukraine hosted by the Chair of Hertfordshire County Council, Annie Brewster.
Due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Hertfordshire has taken approximately 1200 Ukrainian guests living and some working, attending schools, dealing with health issues and coping with life in the best way that they can.
Kate delivered a very empathetic speech to remember the past 12 months:
The sense of loss and bereavement and leaving loved ones at home which is with you daily must be immense. We remember and recognise your bravery, and courage to leave your beloved country and also leaving your husbands, children’s fathers, grandfathers and all the male relatives to fight, save towns, cities and survive. This must be so traumatic, especially for the children and the older generation.
We remain supportive and I would like to thank the county council and all the other public and voluntary sectors who rallied around so positively and you felt welcome and we embrace you into our society remains as strong as ever.
