Elfriede Starer presented with her British Empire Medal (BEM)
The Lord-Lieutenant Robert Voss CBE said “It was a huge honour to present Elfriede Starer With her British Empire Medal (BEM) today -Sunday 4th July- in the beautiful garden of her home in Watford with 30 family members present who had traveled from Devon, Kent Oxford and elsewhere for the occasion.
Such a pleasure to meet Elfriede (who will be 95 tomorrow) and her husband Fritz and to note how many similarities there are between our two families. Her BEM was awarded for her Holocaust education work with many local schools telling them her story of her escape from the Nazis and arriving in the UK on the Kindertransport. A truly inspiring lady who bravely tells her story to another generation…and this was a day before her 95th birthday-as I told her a similar age to another amazing lady who I have the honour to represent- Her Majesty The Queen.”
