This memorial commemorates 2nd Lt John D Ellis and his crew who “gave their lives in order to prevent their aircraft from crashing on our homes” in Cheshunt. After a mid-air incident on 12th August 1944, 2nd Lt John D Ellis steered his American B-24 Liberator Bomber laden with bombs away from Cheshunt and crash landed just outside the town, killing all ten crew members on board.
