Stevenage Crucial Crew initiative at Stevenage Football Club
Deputy Lieutenant Ian Piggott was privileged to represent the Lieutenancy at Stevenage Football Club to see how the Crucial Crew initiative operates and educates over 1000 local year 5s (10 and 11-year-olds). With volunteers from the police, ambulance, fire and the football club itself, children learn and are engaged in exercises to help them understand the risks of knife crime, online abuse, risks of fire, how to perform CPR, and healthy mind and body activities.
A number of the adults present representing various local organisations/councils had themselves attended a similar day twenty or so years earlier, and the impact of that day was still vivid to each of them.
It was evident that this day would carry the same longevity of learning. Ian was very impressed with how engaged the children were and how committed the volunteers were to getting difficult messages across in a coherent and memorable way.
