Harpenden ‘Orange the World Herts’ 2025

Category : Events

On Thursday 27 November the Soroptimists’ Orange the World Herts campaign focused on Harpenden with an event at the Eric Morecambe Centre, hosted by Harpenden Council and Cllr Beth Fisher, Mayor of Harpenden. Police Sergeant Mark Essam from Harpenden Neighbourhood Policing gave a presentation which led to some positive group discussions about the way forward to end the abuse of women. There were families of victims of domestic violence in the audience, which made the discussions very real. Deputy Lieutenants Kate Belinis (also a member of Soroptimist International Hertford & District) and Alderman Annie Brewster DL asked questions and were engaged in the interactive session. Harpenden MP Victoria Collins was also in attendance, which meant that she was able to pick up on points raised to take up with central government.

Annie Brewster DL said – “It is tremendous to see how far ‘Orange the World Herts’ is spreading across the county, highlighting the growing extent of violence towards women and girls.  Presentations about the targeted work of Neighbourhood Police and the Chrysalis Centre in Harpenden brought home the challenges faced.  It was heartbreaking to hear personal stories from those present but this gave an opportunity to brainstorm ways to encourage bystanders to call out unacceptable behaviour they witness.  A truly excellent event.”
